Abstract
Among the works of Middle Ages builders, aside from Romanesque buildings of renowned beauty and prestigious defensive works, the rise of gothic architecture is a significant step in the history of architecture. The audacious work that these buildings represent compels the admiration of tourists, art historians and current builders, from a technical point of view, there is no doubt that working on the construction of these buildings required know-how, or rather an extraordinary know-how. This document will focus on: a brief reminder of how the gothic style, characterized by its rib vault, is a particularly unique way of building, which is a good response for the economical and social needs of the time. To establish an inventory of the concepts which are necessary to comprehend the mechanical functioning of these buildings. To understand what is the current state of our knowledge on the subject after the studies of the last quarter of the 20th century which has been particularly productive on the matter. To notice that we still have a lot to learn about. To conclude to the extraordinary intuition of these master masons who were able, without any scientific tools, to produce these work of art.
