Abstract
Relatively early in his career, Gerry began publishing essays of soaring sweep. When the muses of metaphor and the sirens of style beckoned, Gerry's passionate, creative ideas came forth in eloquent richness and pedagogical power. Moreover, in Gerry's writing there was always resonance with the humanities. He knew, by virtue of his education, so much of what had happened in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, the zeniths there of science, medicine, music, art, and literature. But he also, by virtue of exodus, knew of the horrific. As to remembrance, Gerry was a physician-scientist analog of Herman Wouk and Marcel Proust. And as to social justice, he was a physician-scientist analog of Louis Brandeis. These tributaries were always in Gerry's mind, flowing into the medical and scientific domains of his essays as a grand, commutative delta. Beyond his sterling reputations as a rheumatologist and cellular immunologist, and his revered status as a teacher and mentor both in the clinic and the laboratory, Gerry Weissmann enriched us by his broader erudition, conveyed so nimbly by his engaging pen.
