This paper presents a technique for generating an amplitude tapered incident plane wave of a prescribed polarization and a prescribed incidence angle by summing a finite number of propagating uniform plane waves each constitutive plane wave having is own propagation direction, its own amplitude and it own polarization. The choice of the propagating plane waves corresponds here to a sampling of the physical angular space (θ,φ). This contrasts with the 2-D Fourier transform technique of Reference [1] that corresponds to a sampling of the spectral plane (κ x , κ y ) where κ x = sin(θ) cos(φ) and κ y = sin(θ) sin(φ). Our technique is based on the summation of propagating plane waves only whereas the technique of Reference [1] is based on the summation of both propagating and evanescent plane waves. Evanescent plane waves are plane waves with Imag(κ z ) ≠ 0 and correspond to points of the (κ x , κ y ) plane lying outside the unit circle of the spectral plane. The dominant plane wave is the plane wave with its propagation direct corresponding to the prescribed incidence angle described by the spherical angles θi and φi. Both techniques are vector forms of the scalar theorem of plane wave spectrum decomposition. The motivation for producing a tapered beam here is to avoid the diffraction waves caused by illuminating also the edges of a scatterer of which we want to compute by FDTD simulation the reflection and he transmission coefficients corresponding to the bulk material property of the scatterer.
