L’étymologie du terme « secret », issu du participe passé du verbe secernere signifiant « mettre à part », « séparer », invite à penser le secret en termes d’espace. Le Dictionnaire de Trévoux confirme son affinité avec le domaine privé en spécifiant l’usage de l’adjectif appliqué à un lieu : « Un lieu secret, c’est le privé », c’est-à-dire un espace solitaire, isolé. Au cours du xviiie siècle, les habitations, en particulier urbaines, connaissent des évolutions, selon un double mouvement de clôture et d’ouverture : l’espace devient labyrinthe, fondé sur les plis et replis architecturaux, tendu vers une dispersion illimitée, entre miniaturisation et circulation. Dans sa mise en scène récurrente de la préservation et de la surprise du secret, les fictions du xviiie siècle rendent compte des aménagements contemporains, en exploitent le potentiel dramatique et en traduisent la nature symbolique. Si la critique a bien mis en évidence l’usage libertin de l’espace, dans la gradation spatialisée du désir, il apparaît que le secret tenu caché ou mis à découvert dans les œuvres du xviiie siècle offre le spectacle du secret en une pratique spatialisée et contrôlée. L’espace n’est pas seulement un outil pour accéder au secret, mais un instrument pour séduire et contraindre, en somme pour captiver.
