Abstract
« Toute ma vie, j’ai couru pour trouver une reponse a la question de mon enfance : c’est quoi la justice ».Ainsi s’exprime, dans un epais livre de souvenirs, un grand avocat, Me Henri Leclerc, âge aujourd’hui de 84 ans. Ce recit d’une vie temoigne certes d’avancees, mais aussi de reculs inquietants sur le plan du droit, au fil des humeurs d’une societe traquant ses propres fantomes ou de gouvernants obeissant parfois hâtivement aux clameurs. Deja, a 14 ans, apres la Liberation, l’horreur que lui inspirent les scenes de l’epuration sont decisives pour ce fils d’instituteurs qui se rappelle son pere s’indignant de toute absence de proces. Sa voie est tracee : il sera defenseur. Henri Leclerc est ce qu’on appelle dans les medias « un monstre du barreau ». Meme si son apparence, et sa voix – element capital pour un avocat – n’ont rien de tonitruant ou de « monstrueux ». Lui, ce qu’il inspire, c’est d’abord de la confiance. C’est sur ce registre qu’il sera le plus convaincant devant bien des jures. Il est d’abord un inlassable defenseur des Droits de l’homme, qui s’est efforce de respecter un principe de base : « Ce n’est pas le crime qu’on juge, c’est l’homme. » Dans la galerie des illustres « Maitres » qui l’ont inspire, il y a en premier Albert Naud qui defendit Laval, mais il y a aussi d’autres tenors et l’on apprecie tout particulierement ici l’hommage qu’il rend professionnellement a un avocat qu’il cite a plusieurs reprises, un autre grand defenseur des Droits de l’homme,
