This chapter describes cow behaviour, health and welfare in dairy herds using robotic (automated) milking systems (AMS). We discuss three key aspects of milking that differ in AMS herds compared to conventional systems, and their implications for cow behaviour and welfare. We review the automation of the milking process itself, followed by the fact that milking is done individually, instead of in groups. Finally, we discuss how to motivate cows to visit the robot voluntarily or to direct them using different traffic systems. With each of these aspects and their associated challenges, we provide management recommendations to improve cow behaviour and welfare in robotic milking herds.
