Esse trabalho tem como objetivo discorrer acerca da leitura e escrita para pessoas cegas e sua importância para o acesso a informacao, corroborando a necessidade de investimento na formacao do professor. Foi feita uma pesquisa bibliografica utilizando-se materiais em Braille, digitalizados ou artigos cientificos online. A literatura apresenta que a alfabetizacao em Braille proporciona a autonomia intelectual, sendo um recurso essencial na formacao da pessoa cega. O professor deve atentar as peculiaridades do sistema Braille para que o ensino-aprendizagem seja satisfatorio. A educacao das pessoas com deficiencia visual nao pode ser apenas definida pelo padrao adotado pela visao, pois “enxergar” implica em perceber tambem os estimulos tateis. Conclui-se que as pessoas que enxergam aprendem a lidar com diversas situacoes corriqueiras, observando o ambiente e relacionando-se com os outros e com a informacao e que e preciso possibilitar essas experiencias tambem a pessoa que nao enxerga. O aprendizado do Braille cumpre o papel de inserir a pessoa cega no mundo das palavras e na formacao do pensamento abstrato, ampliando o repertorio conceitual e tornando-a mais autonoma. A impossibilidade de desempenhar esses papeis pode tornar a pessoa cega insatisfeita e isolada o que trara prejuizos ao seu desenvolvimento e participacao social.
