La conception dominante de la criminalistique semble à l’heure actuelle globalement orientée vers les analyses en laboratoire et la présentation de preuves devant les tribunaux, laissant ainsi de côté l’investigation de la scène de crime et les techniciens en identité judiciaire. Ces derniers jouant néanmoins un rôle de premier plan dans l’exploitation des traces matérielles, leur sélection et l’appréciation de leurs aptitudes par les dirigeants policiers représentent une responsabilité managériale déterminante pour l’investigation de la scène de crime. Par l’entremise d’entretiens semi-dirigés, cet article vise à déterminer les compétences attendues des techniciens en identité judiciaire par les cadres policiers du Québec et à comprendre comment elles s’inscrivent dans leur conception de la profession. Il met entre autres en évidence l’absence d’acteurs scientifiques impliqués dans l’appréciation des compétences des techniciens en identité judiciaire et l’attention particulière accordée par les gestionnaires policiers à la conformité aux règles de procédures. Les dirigeants policiers gagneraient ainsi à concevoir davantage l’investigation de la scène de crime comme un effort scientifique et à considérer le rôle des techniciens en scène de crime dans le déploiement de l’action de sécurité afin d’optimiser leur sélection, leur appréciation et, ultimement, leur efficacité.
