Abstract
I present some lessons from an unanticipated research and publishing journey. They demonstrate that research can become a highly unpredictable process whose mission fails, yielding instead, after struggle and reorientation, some useful surprises. Whereas the less controversial surprises may be welcomed by academics, the more discordant ones may resist publication – but draw significant interest from practitioners.
