Abstract
Cet article propose une première synthèse sur le funéraire antique en Normandie occidentale établie à partir d’un corpus de 29 sites retenus parmi une documentation très dense et de qualité inégale. La plupart sont inédits, certains ont été partiellement publiés. Ce corpus illustre un large panel des pratiques funéraires identifiées au niveau régional et couvre une vaste plage chronologique allant du i er siècle avant notre ère au v e siècle. La crémation des corps domine largement le paysage funéraire bas normand depuis la Conquête et durant tout le Haut-Empire. Cette pratique cède peu à peu la place à celle de l’inhumation qui devient, à son tour, majoritaire dans le courant du iii e siècle. Cependant, de nombreux sites prouvent que ces deux rites ont longtemps coexisté. Au-delà de ces considérations, les sites funéraires antiques de Normandie occidentale reflètent une variété d’occupations depuis la tombe isolée au mausolée familial, en passant par la nécropole communautaire. Seules les nécropoles urbaines demeurent à ce jour non documentées.
