Abstract
The division between private/public spheres is key to Western knowledge and the liberal tradition. Critical analysis has exposed the division as ideological and as linked to power relations. The public sphere is constructed as the legitimate realm of powerful groups and reflects the hegemony of heterosexuality. The private sphere has been gendered female and homosexuality has been tolerated only if kept private. Both domestic labor and domestic violence have been hidden in the household. Despite challenges to the private/public divide by feminists and those with non‐normative sexualities, the divide continues to hold resonance and to be the site of critical inquiry, especially given the influence of neoliberalism.
