Synthetic cathinones, or ‘bath salts’, are a heterogeneous group of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) that have recently joined the illicit drug scene. Once considered a ‘legal high’, recent drug legislation has rendered ‘bath salt’ use illegal in many countries, reflecting their high potential for abuse and dependence. Synthetic cathinones, such as mephedrone and MDPV, increase the concentration of monoamines in the synaptic cleft, leading to their stimulant and empathogenic effects, but their use can also lead to psychosis and multiple medical sequelae. Because clinicians are relatively unfamiliar with NPS and since diagnostic testing for ‘bath salts’ is not routinely available, synthetic cathinone abuse presents a significant challenge for clinicians. The current trend in the management of synthetic cathinone intoxication is that of supportive care and symptom-driven treatments. The long-term consequences of synthetic cathinone use remain unclear, but they likely include various medical and psychiatric sequelae. As newer forms of NPS enter the illicit drug scene, increased public health efforts are required to address the NPS crisis, which should focus on increasing education and awareness of NPS use and its consequences to at-risk populations. Les cathinones synthétiques ou les «sels de bain» sont un groupe hétérogène de nouvelles substances psychoactives (NPS) qui se sont récemment retrouvés dans la liste de drogues illicites. Autrefois considérée comme un «high» permis par la loi, la législation récente sur les drogues a rendu le «bain de sel” illégal dans de nombreux pays, ce qui reflète leur potentiel élevé d'abus et de dépendance. Les cathinones synthétiques, telles que la méphédrone et le MDPV, augmentent la concentration de monoamines dans la fente synaptique, ce qui entraîne leur effet stimulant et empathogène, mais leur utilisation peut également conduire à une psychose et à des séquelles médicales multiples.
