Au XVIIIe siècle la plupart des centres faïenciers français du Midi de la France se sont copiés ou imités et seuls les historiens de l’art du XXe siècle se sont hasardés à émettre des hypothèses quant à l’identité artistique propre de certains centres. Il en est ainsi de la faïence toulousaine souvent confondue avec les faïences fabriquées dans les ateliers ruraux du Sud-Ouest ou dans les manufactures urbaines de Bordeaux et de Montpellier. La révision de l’historiographie confrontée aux faïences découvertes sur des sites de consommation canadiens montre que la faïence toulousaine relève du mythe et qu’il faut abandonner définitivement les hypothèses émises au siècle passé sur d’éventuelles caractéristiques stylistiques qui permettraient de la différencier. Plus globalement, cette réévaluation de l’historiographie remet en cause la hiérarchie ville-campagne dans les processus d’innovation et de production, à l’avantage des manufactures rurales dont les capacités dans ces domaines sont souvent sous-estimées ou ignorées.
