Le contraste est frappant, dans les événements de Mai 1968, entre leur rapidité et la manière ambiguë avec laquelle ils ont marqué à long terme la mémoire contemporaine. Mai 68 ayant jadis opéré une transformation de valeurs et un changement de génération, son quarantième anniversaire s’est trouvé pris dans les filets d’une commémoration à double face, départageant ceux qui s’en revendiquent et ceux qui s’y opposent, qu’ils ou elles aient vécu ou non la période. Récemment, en France, la campagne des élections présidentielles de 2007 a vu les deux protagonistes du second tour s’affronter au nom des valeurs et de l’héritage de Mai 68. Alors que pour les un(e)s, l’année 68 a heureusement permis une évolution des mœurs et des mentalités indéniablement féconde pour l’avenir, i.e. jusqu’à notre présent, pour les autres elle reste avant tout le signe caractéristique d’une volonté de jouissance irréfléchie et sans bornes. Voici, bien sommairement orchestré, le clivage, certainement en partie générationnel, à dix ans près (avoir dix, vingt, trente ou quarante ans en 68... était-ce la même chose ?). Par ailleurs, évoquer en 2008 « un héritage » aura pu sembler contestable, cocasse, parfois comique, puisque la génération active des acteurs de 68 est loin d’avoir disparu du champ social et politique, fût-ce pour se prononcer pour ou contre Mai 68. Affaire de mémoire, donc, particulière et collective, partagée dans plusieurs régions du monde, qui appelle le témoignage, l’analyse et l’interprétation.
