Abstract
A l'egal d'autres productions culturelles du dix-neuvieme siecle, l'opera a contribue a feconder l'imaginaire d'ecrivains attentifs a la double dimension artistique et institutionnelle du genre. Dans la seconde moitie de la periode, les references de la fiction narrative aux elements constitutifs du phenomene lyrique font de celui-ci le support d'une reflexion metalitteraire ou la personne de la cantatrice, le regard porte sur le spectacle et la voix chantee sont autant d'elements thematiques grâce auxquels romanciers et nouvellistes mettent en scene leur rapport a l'ecriture. A cette annexion de l'opera au discours autoreflexif des œuvres s'ajoute son apport a leur propos anthropologique. Ainsi, les allusions au spectacle lyrique constituent pour les ecrivains un outil essentiel de l'exploration des limites de la realite menee par le genre romanesque. La fiction narrative recourt encore au drame chante, figuration de l'equilibre instable de l'apollinien et du dionysiaque, pour mettre en evidence la menace exercee par ce dernier sur le corps social, sans cesse mis en danger par les ravages d'une cruaute presente dans les mythes fecondant l'opera. Enfin, sa connivence avec la sphere sociopolitique fournit un important materiau a la critique sociale de romanciers qui figurent par ailleurs l'emergence d'une subjectivite rebelle par la conscience d'un spectateur desormais plus sensible aux representations de son theâtre mental qu'aux fastes des ideologies regnantes.
