Recherches variees, issues de disciplines diverses, menees en Europe autour de l’education en internat, l’accueil familial et les alternatives au placement d’enfants et de jeunes en situation difficile. Les auteurs des quinze textes retenus, au terme d’une selection parmi ceux presentes au sixieme Congres de l’EUSARF - Universite Paris X-Nanterre, septembre 1998 – font etat des savoirs actuels et des evolutions dans le domaine de la suppleance familiale. Six pays sont representes dans cette selection : la France (4 textes), la Grande-Bretagne (4 textes), les Pays-Bas (3 textes), le Quebec, Canada (1 texte), l’Italie (1 texte), la Pologne (1 texte), et les Etats-Unis (1 texte) Quatre thematiques structurent l’ouvrage : - les dimensions institutionnelles et les innovations ; - la suppleance familiale interrogee par la recherche ; - les effets des prises en charge ; - les relations familiales et le reseau social. Les communications faites au Congres, et retenues dans l’ouvrage, presentent des degres tres variables de technicite. Certaines permettent de mesurer mieux que d’autres les drames humains rencontres lors d’une approche de ce delicat probleme de la suppleance familiale. Dans leur apparente secheresse, les etudes plus statistiques ont pour elle l’espoir d’influencer les decideurs - politiques ou sociaux - ayant en charge cet aspect de la vie sociale.
