본 연구는 아동들이 사회적 배제(따돌림)에 대한 도덕적 판단을 내릴 때 본인 자신의 생각에 기초하는지 아니면 정보 제공자 역할을 담당하는 타인의 의견에 기초하는지에 대한 연구이다. 총 139명의 아동들이 본 연구 조사에 참여하였으며, 참여 아동들을 두 개의 연령 집단 (4-5세 그룹 v. 6-7세 그룹)으로 나누어 각 집단 간의 차이를 연구 분석하였다. 아동들은 사회적 배제(따돌림)에 관련된 에피소드(예: “여러 명의 친구들이 어느 한 아이가 외국인이라는 이유로 그 아이를 따돌렸다”)를 듣고 난 후, 바로 이어서 이에 대해 상반되는 주장을 하는 두 부류의 정보 제공자의 의견을 접하였다. 한 부류는 여러 명의 또래 아이들로 이루어진 집단이었고, 다른 부류는 한 명의 어른이었다. 한 쪽의 정보 제공자 집단이 “이것은 타당하다”라고 주장할 때, 반대로 다른 정보 제공자는 “이것은 타당하지 않다”라고 주장하였다. 본 연구의 결과에 따르면, 아동들이 사회적 배제(따돌림)에 대한 도덕적 판단을 내릴 때에는, 외부의 정보 제공자의 의견보다 본인들의 생각에 기초하는 경향을 보였다. 즉, 정보 제공자가 여러 명의 또래 아이들로 이루어진 집단이든 한 명의 어른이든 관계없이 아동들은 타인의 견해 대신 본인 자신의 의견을 적극적으로 활용하여 도덕적 판단을 내렸다. 더 나아가, 연령대가 높은 6-7세 아동들은 연령대가 낮은 4-5세 아동들보다 더욱 적극적으로 자신의 의견을 반영하여 도덕적인 판단을 내리는 양상을 띄었다.
