Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Jeong and Empathy for Pastoral Care and Counseling in the Korean Context Sung Il Moon Doctor of Philosophy in Theology University of St. Michael’s College 2017 Abstract Korean ministers practice their caring ministry in an environment of jeong, a Korean cultural sentiment embodying relational bonding. The dissertation explores the relationship of empathy and jeong, and its pastoral implications by examining biblical, theological and psychological foundations. Jeong’s major characteristics are interdependence, intimate affection, sharing of simjeong, we-ness; and pleasant or unpleasant feelings. Empathy denotes five key attributes: a free shift to the other’s inner world, a non-judgmental stance, congruence, communicative attunement, all preconditions for therapeutic efficiency in Carl Rogers’ psychotherapy. The role of jeong in facilitating empathy is based on vicarious perceptions, tender-hearted communication with simjeong, compassion, and a non-judgmental attitude. A jeong-empathy relationship, however, can operate in dysfunctional or ineffective ways due to jeong’s exclusion of outsiders in a jeong-relationship, and unbalanced power relationships. Mature jeong-empathy relationships can empower pastoral caregivers’ empathic understanding of people in trouble, and can help in overcoming ethical issues related to jeong-filled relationships, e.g., favoritism and injustice. A balanced power relationship and the enhancement of compassionate jeong and empathy for the weak, the needy, and the marginalized are appropriate goals for Korean pastoral practitioners. An integrated understanding of jeong and empathic relationships with consideration for the public might provide an advanced model for Korean pastoral ministry.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
