Abstract
Paul-André Crépeau avait l’âme d’un universitaire. Ses abondantes publications révèlent une personne animée par le désir d’enrichir le droit, souvent en s’inspirant du droit français, qu’il admirait. C’était un homme de convictions, engagé dans la défense de l’autonomie du droit québécois. Descendant de l’école nationaliste, il y révèle son côté romantique. Parfois polémiste, il n’a pas hésité à critiquer vigoureusement législateur, gouvernement, juges et auteurs quand, à ses yeux, ils étaient dans l’erreur. Il s’était donné comme mission d’être le gardien de l’orthodoxie. Il avait un esprit indépendant, qui l’a amené parfois à s’opposer à certaines initiatives de sa propre faculté. Il était habité par un leadership intellectuel ; il s’est constamment employé à influencer l’évolution du droit québécois, cherchant à faire accepter des interprétations, des règles et des concepts, comme l’intensité des obligations. Véritable entrepreneur universitaire, désireux de servir le monde juridique et la société, il a dirigé en maître la réforme duCode civil du Québecet a oeuvré dans les institutions du savoir au niveau national, fondant des collections de traités et de dictionnaires ainsi qu’un centre de recherche, et au niveau international, comme Unidroit et l’Académie internationale de droit comparé.
