Jusqu’à maintenant l’attachement père-enfant et l’engagement paternel sont demeurés deux domaines d’études séparés l’un de l’autre. Grâce aux recherches sur l’attachement au père on sait maintenant que tout comme la mère il est une figure importante pour l’enfant. Toutefois on connait moins ce qui prédit la qualité de l’attachement père-enfant. Les mesures actuelles en attachement ne permettent pas non plus de rendre compte de l’impact de l’attachement au père sur le développement de l’enfant. Ces mesures ont été validées auprès de mères et elles sont surtout axées sur le comportement de l’enfant en cas de détresse. Or, avec la littérature sur l’engagement paternel, on voit que le père est davantage une figure d’ouverture au monde pour l’enfant qu’une figure de réconfort. Selon plusieurs, l’attachement au père se formerait donc différemment de l’attachement à la mère. Il reste que l’engagement des pères a beaucoup changé dans les dernières années. Il se différencie de moins en moins de l’engagement des mères. Et on ne sait pas encore si cet engagement à la hausse modifie la formation du lien d’attachement, si les pères deviennent comme les mères des figures de réconfort. Les auteurs suggèrent de tenir compte dans les futures études de l’engagement paternel en même temps que l’attachement père-enfant afin de mieux comprendre comment se forme le lien et afin de mieux prédire le développement socio-affectif de l’enfant.
