On dit de la diversité qu’elle est une richesse, mais comment prétendre à sa préservation dans le contexte actuel de globalisation ? À l’heure de la standardisation des compétences individuelles critériées par le biais de documents politiques tels que le CECR (2001), dont certains diront qu’il participe à une marchandisation, voire à une MacDonaldisation de l’enseignement supérieur, cet article présente le rôle majeur que peut jouer une certification en langues dès lors qu’elle s’inscrit dans une dynamique « énovante » ; un concept que nous empruntons à Gélinas et Fortin (1996), et qui repose sur l’idée que les unités d’un système sont à l’origine de nouveautés émergentes dans le cadre de contextes spécifiques. Le présent article questionne dans un premier temps la possible adéquation entre les attentes du niveau macro, exprimées par le biais de politiques européennes d’éducation normalisatrices, et la réalité des niveaux méso (les établissements d’enseignement supérieur) et micro, constitué d’individus aux langues, cultures et compétences diverses. La question de la possible construction d’un projet identitaire européen au travers des langues sera enfin posée, en érigeant l’énovation comme un concept à même de mettre en écho des dynamiques potentiellement contraires. L’outil certificatif sera alors remis dans la perspective d’une utilisation sur le terrain de l’auteur.
