Dans son œuvre romanesque émaillée de jeux rhétoriques, Rabelais pratique l’ensemble des genres déclamatoires et met à profit l’éventail d’exercices de composition préliminaires ( præexercitamenta ou progymnasmata ) pratiqués dans les classes de rhétorique. Les manuels de composition donnés par les rhéteurs antiques, à l’instar des Progymnasmata d’Aphthonios d’Antioche qui connurent une fortune éditoriale inouïe au XVI e siècle et jouèrent un rôle fondamental dans la formation de l’élite lettrée durant la Première Modernité, servent de modèle à la pratique de ces différents exercices dans les cinq Livres . Les séquences finales du Gargantua et du Tiers livre constituent un lieu privilégié pour la mise en œuvre de morceaux rhétoriques conduits selon les préceptes de l’art oratoire, mais également de leur récupération ludique, procédant à l’illustration en langue française des différentes catégories de l’ ars bene dicendi . L’examen de ces deux séquences permet de réévaluer leur fonction dans l’architecture des récits rabelaisiens et de mieux comprendre la réception des modèles rhétoriques dans la geste de Pantagruel.
