Abstract
De plus en plus d’enfants présentent des problèmes intériorisés et extériorisés au Canada. Étant donné leurs conséquences sur l’adaptation sociale et scolaire ultérieure, il est crucial d’identifier les facteurs associés à leur développement. Cette étude vise à mieux comprendre les rôles respectifs de l’orientation mentale paternelle et du tempérament de l’enfant dans la prédiction des problèmes intériorisés et extériorisés durant la petite enfance. Elle compte la participation de 168 dyades père-enfant. Le tempérament de l’enfant a été mesuré à 6 mois à l’aide du Laboratory Temperament Assessment Battery. L’orientation mentale paternelle, soit la propension du père à nommer les états mentaux de l’enfant, a été mesuré à 6 mois l'aide d’un système de codification basé sur l’analyse des commentaires du père durant une période de jeux. Les problèmes intériorisés et extériorisés de l’enfant ont été mesurés à 12 mois à l'aide d'un questionnaire complété par les pères. Des régressions linéaires multiples ont été effectuées. Les résultats montrent que le nombre de commentaires appropriés des pères sur les états mentaux de l’enfant est associé à moins de problèmes intériorisés chez les enfants, mais pas le tempérament de l’enfant. Ils soulignent l’importance de l’orientation mentale paternelle dans le développement socioaffectif de l’enfant.
