En las ultimas decadas, se han hecho evidentes las contradicciones y consecuencias del modelo neoliberal de produccion habitacional implantado en Chile durante los anos setenta. En este contexto, se reconoce la emergencia de diversas experiencias las cuales buscan desarrollar procesos alternativos y/o en paralelo a las formas hegemonicas de produccion habitacional, a fin de devolverle el caracter colectivo a esta, con diferentes grados de control y deliberacion sobre los procesos del habitat. El presente articulo tiene como objetivo analizar criticamente estas experiencias de produccion social del habitat, buscando reconocer tanto sus limites como sus potencialidades en tanto alternativas al modelo de desarrollo habitacional vigente en Chile. Con tal proposito se realizo un estudio exploratorio de diez experiencias en el Gran Valparaiso, mediante una estrategia metodologica cualitativa. Las conclusiones de este trabajo senalan que, sin estar exentas de dificultades, dichas experiencias construyen practicas contrahegemonicas a lo largo de lo que se conoce convencionalmente como la “cadena de valor” de la produccion habitacional. Estas emergentes practicas y sentidos no solo promueven nuevos marcos de accion y aprendizajes para las politicas habitacionales en Chile; tambien constituyen, desde la diversidad de formas habitacionales, “otras” formas de produccion y gestion del habitat en las ciudades chilenas.
