Les auteures explorent l’identité que construisent les élèves de 8 e année en immersion française précoce, en leur qualité d’apprenants du français, au sein des communautés de praticiens en milieu scolaire. elles proposent un modèle grâce auquel les métaphores dans l’apprentissage d’une langue peuvent être considérées comme une forme de récit à utiliser à la fois pour susciter et pour analyser les représentations métacognitives des identités socialement situées des élèves à titre d’apprenants d’une langue. Dans le cadre d’une étude plus vaste portant sur l’investissement des élèves en immersion française dans l’apprentissage du français, 31 participants ont construit 85 comparaisons relatives à l’apprentissage et à l’oral et l’écrit en français. Ces comparaisons ont été regroupées en sept métaphores conceptuelles : persévérance, dépassement physique et cognitif, expérience de changement incarné, transformation de soi, malaise incarné, insuffisance et affect. Des échantillons de discours des élèves montrent comment la coconstruction de la métaphore a créé un espace interprétatif pour le développement de leurs identités au sein de leurs communautés de praticiens en milieu scolaire. Enfin, les auteures analysent la pertinence pédagogique de la métaphore pour accroître l’investissement des élèves dans l’apprentissage du français.
