Abstract
À partir de 1894, la Society of Beaux-Arts Architects de New-York met sur pied un condensé purement artistique du cursus que ses membres avaient suivi à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris (ENSBA). En 1904, le Paris Prize, calqué sur le concours de Rome et dont le lauréat est admis en première classe de l’ENSBA, met un point d’orgue à ce système destiné en priorité aux dessinateurs d’agence, qui se propage à travers les USA et même au Canada. Après en avoir identifié le contexte et les enjeux artistiques, professionnels et socio-culturels, nous en analysons les modalités, dérivées de la « mise en examen » pratiquée à l’ENSBA : esquisse « en loge », travail dans un atelier indépendant, jugement à huis clos, mentions et médailles, exposition publique... Tout en portant à controverse, ce transfert pédagogique qui perdure jusqu’aux années 30 reflète le dynamisme de la diaspora des Beaux-Arts outre-Atlantique.
