Abstract
The aim of this paper is to understand the power dynamics in hierarchical relationships involving university student characters and their professors. Taking Quebec novels as an example, I examine a sample of 11 novels with a literature student as the main character, chosen on the basis of the representation of at least one libidinous academic: La dot de la Mere Missel (2000), by Pierre Tourangeau; Carnets de naufrage (2000), by Guillaume Vigneault; La breche (2002), by Marie-Sissi Labreche; Scrapbook (2004), by Nadine Bismuth; Tarquimpol (2007), by Serge Lamothe; Catastrophes (2007), by Pierre Samson; L'impudeur (2008), by Alain Roy; Entheos (2008), by Julie Gravel-Richard; L'amour des maitres (2011), by Melissa Gregoire; Le corps des femmes est un champ de bataille (2012), by Laurent Chabin; and PsychoZe , by Marie-Christine Arbour (2016). It appears that these representations follow two paths: on the one hand, the pedagogical eros can be recovered in carnivalesque logic; on the other hand, it can also serve as a catalyst (positive or not) for the protagonists' quest for learning. Whether pedagogical eros is accompanied by an arsenal of stereotypes or serves as a turning point in a successful quest for the self, its serial analysis reveals certain mechanisms that make sex and power permutable.
