Le théâtre foisonne depuis longtemps au sein des communautés francophones hors Québec mais souvent dans un contexte où la lutte pour la survivance linguistique et culturelle est difficile. Dans les cas les plus difficiles, on est souvent à court de moyens pour atteindre un véritable professionnalisme dans la pratique théâtrale, bien que le théâtre hors Québec se soit généralement affranchi de cette image de la survivance. La mission communautaire a animée de nombreux créateurs et, dans les milieux urbains, une quête esthétique a motivé les efforts qui ont permis la naissance à la quinzaine de compagnies professionnelles et aux trois associations qui assurent la coordination de certaines de leurs activités: l'Association des compagnies de théâtre de l'Ouest (ACTO) fondée en 1999, l'Association des théâtre francophones du Canada (ATFC) fondée en 1984 et Théâtre Action (TA) fondé en 1972, en Ontario. Le Cercle Molière de Saint-Boniface existe, certes, depuis 1925, mais les autres compagnies qui oeuvrent aujourd'hui n'ont été établies qu'à partir de 1967. Malgré la jeunesse de ces compagnies, on s'inquiète parfois que l'histoire récente soit oubliée. Par exemple, Richard Thérieux explique que pour le 25e anniversaire du Théâtre la Seizième «personne au conseil d'administration ne pouvait raconter l'histoire» (184). Heureusement, le théâtre professionnel émergent se trouve étudié et expliqué dans ce recueil de la collection sociologique «Roger-Bernard» des Éditions du Nordir. Hélène Beauchamp et Joël Beddows expliquent en préface que les textes rassemblés se veulent «une lecture historique des événements, une lecture doublée d'analyse» (9).
