Abstract
Cette etude examine les changements qui ont touche la concentration geographique des principaux groupes d'immigrants au Canada en ce qui a trait a leur destination initiale et redistribution subsequente au cours des deux dernieres decennies. En meme temps, elle porte sur le role des collectivites immigrantes deja etablies a l'egard du choix de leur lieu d'etablissement par les nouveaux immigrants. Les resultats montrent une augmentation marquee des niveaux de concentration quant a la destination initiale parmi les principaux groupes d'immigrants tout au long des annees 1970 et 1980, tendance qui disparait au cours de la decennie suivante. La redistribution apres l'immigration s'est faite generalement a petite echelle et a eu des effets non uniformes sur la modification de la concentration des destinations initiales chez les groupes d'immigrants et les cohortes d'arrivee a l'interieur d'un groupe. Meme dans le cas des groupes d'immigrants et de refugies dont l'etablissement initial a ete fortement influence par les interventions du gouvernement, la redistribution n'a modifie que partiellement la repartition geographique generale. Enfin, l'etude montre que la taille de la collectivite immigrante deja etablie n'est pas un facteur important quant au choix de leur lieu d'etablissement par les nouveaux immigrants, lorsque les effets fixes du lieu sont pris en compte.
