Abstract
Door corona is de samenleving minder maakbaar gebleken. Het virus trekt zich weinig aan van nationale grenzen en is overal. Wat zijn mogelijke effecten van corona op historisch besef? Wordt het een breukervaring tussen verleden en toekomst, een point of no return? \nIn mijn afscheidsrede ga ik in op de conceptualisatie mens, geschiedenis en natuur. Het streven naar planetary health en een ecologisch verantwoorde toekomst vraagt om een nieuwe geschiedenis. Ons geschiedbeeld berust op een mens/natuur dualisme dat diepgeworteld is in het westerse denken. Onder invloed van kapitalisme en industrialisatie plaatste de mens zich als actieve actor tegenover een passieve natuur. Inmiddels zijn we hard op weg naar een zelfgecreëerde ecocide. \nHet idee van de natuur als een beheersbare entiteit buiten ons is niet universeel, maar een cultureel historische voorstelling die zich via oudere interpretatiekaders aan ons voordoet. \nAls mensen zich bewust worden van deze interpretatiegeschiedenis, kan meer ecologisch historisch besef ontstaan. \n \nThe corona virus has made society less feasible.
