L’océan Indien est un espace d’échanges et de circulations, traversé par les passages de pratiques, d’imaginaires, de sens et d’origines. Les productions littéraires qui s’ancrent dans l’océan Indien manifestent des imaginaires façonnés par la présence même de cette étendue océanique dans le paysage et l’histoire des lieux. Cet océan, qui marque l’écriture des lieux, conditionne également un rapport particulier des Hommes au lieu et au monde, révélant des lieux se définissant par une sensibilité spatiale forgée par l’océan. C’est l’écriture de cet océan, les pratiques narratives de l’océan Indien qui sont interrogées depuis différents lieux qui entourent ou se trouvent au sein de cet océan. Dans une perspective et une dynamique que Bertrand Westphal qualifie de « multifocale », l’océan Indien est envisagé à la fois comme « objets d’écritures » et objets d’études, permettant d’explorer les modalités particulières, les mises en mots et en textes originales de cet océan, tout en engageant un retour de la réflexion sur l’être écrivant, la culture regardante, le lieu de départ du regard sur l’océan Indien. Le croisement de regards et de littératures — par l’étude de textes Indiens, Malgaches, Mauriciens et Réunionnais — sur cet espace océanique, nous permet de dégager et de proposer un paradigme d’exploration des littératures de/dans l’océan Indien : une cartologie de l’océan Indien.
