Embodied Anachronism: A Que(e)ry Concerning Memory, Mourning, and Christian Praxis

Abstract
Since the publication of Faith in History and Society in 1977, Catholic political theologian Johann Baptist Metz has devoted his academic career to exploring the relationship between memory, whether on an individual or cultural scale, and Christian praxis. For Metz, effective praxis is contingent upon the fostering and dissemination of what he refers to as dangerous memories. Over the years, Metz’s writings regarding dangerous memories have resonated with scholars both theological and secular. In recent years, queer theorists have likewise focused their attention on exploring the relationship between memory and subversive politics. In an effort to construct a more robust framework for transformative social praxis, this thesis brings the political theology of Johann Metz into dialogue with this emergent field of queer theoretical inquiry. Via a critical comparative analysis of Metzian and queer theoretical approaches to subversive memory and the political, this project culminates in the creation of a new queer praxis of dangerous recollection, a framework for Christian praxis that speaks both to Metz’s formative work and to contemporary queer thought.
