Des développements récents en matière d’étymologie ont conduit à donner une place plus large à la face sémantique du signe : la filiation se juge non plus seulement à partir de la régularité de l’évolution de la forme phonique d’un mot assortie d’un maintien du sens, mais engage à reconstruire l’une et l’autre faces de façon indépendante. Dans cette perspective, la variation lexicale dans le temps et l’espace devient primordiale pour permettre une reconstruction comparative, et seules les données dialectales constituent un corpus suffisamment ample pour autoriser l’analyse. Ainsi, la conjonction des données dialectales réunies et cartographiées dans les atlas linguistiques (représentant l’état lexical du XXe siècle, de Gilliéron à nos jours) – associées, entre autres, aux données historiques de Godefroy – livre un champ extrêmement prometteur. Nous sommes persuadés que l’introduction dans le corpus de types lexicaux propres au Québec, qui ne se manifesteraient plus que dans l’aire québécoise – que ceux-ci y soient hérités ou créés –, serait dans bien des cas éclairante dans le cadre d’une démarche étymologique renouvelée. Il semble difficile, dans le cadre imparti ici, de développer une analyse étymologique qui l’illustrerait ; mais cela ne doit pas nous empêcher de montrer, à partir de quelques exemples évocateurs, quels principes et quelles méthodes sous-tendent notre démarche.
