The Ross Lake oil field in southwestern Saskatchewan, which is operated by Husky Energy Inc., is interpreted as a Cretaceous-age channel sand in the Dimmock Creek member of the Cantuar formation of the Mannville Group. Porosity and permeability of the sandstone (which contains 13 degree API heavy oil) are high, and the reservoir stands out clearly as a thick anomaly, probably because of this. A 3C-3D seismic survey was performed in 2002 (using 0.5 kg dynamite) and in June 2003 a walkaway vertical seismic profile (VSP) was done on wells 11-25 of this field. PP and PS seismic data were used to interpret the target sand body. The paper gives an in-depth account of analytic methods used, and the subsequent interpretation of the results. The authors conclude, among other things, that the VSP data is useful in interpreting PP and PS seismic data. They claim their conclusions are borne out by the products of an existing horizontal well, and that their results are likely useful for identifying further drilling targets. 9 figs.
