11. Bridging the Gap 2: From Validation to Pilot Scale‐Up: Part 2: Building the Pilot Unit
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This chapter provides more advanced engineering and mathematical aspects of the scale-up process, as well as the actual physical construction of a pilot unit. The desired capacity affects the cost and schedule of every step in the piloting process. Capacity should be assessed from a number of directions. These are: commercial scale goal, current scale of testing, equipment availability, and market/testing requirements. Chemical manufacturing operations can be generally divided into two main categories: batch and continuous. The choice of batch versus continuous is often industry specific and ultimately depends on the economics of the process and regulatory requirements. Individual batches can be more easily sampled, analyzed, and tracked, which is helpful for an industry with significant regulatory requirements and strict quality assurance/quality controls. The selection of materials for a pilot plant should consider cost and robustness as well as the importance of gaining valuable data for the commercial plant.
Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
