L’Afrique subsaharienne est indiscutablement un espace multilingue. Bien que l’Union africaine, l’organisme international regroupant les pays du continent, selon l’article 25 de son acte constitutif, adopte comme langues de travail de l’Union et de toutes ses institutions, l’arabe, l’anglais, le français et le portugais, on compte approximativement deux mille langues parlées sur le continent (Leclerc, 2017). Cette multitude de langues implique le besoin d’une communication interlinguistique. Depuis l’ère précoloniale, les traducteurs (et interprètes) africains avaient été toujours formés de manière informelle. Dans son article de 1972 intitulé « The Names and Nature of Translation Studies », James Holmes situe la formation des traducteurs au sein de la traductologie appliquée ou « Applied Translation Studies ». Depuis lors, beaucoup de choses ont été dites et publiées sur la formation des traducteurs dans le monde, mais très peu concernent la situation en Afrique subsaharienne en particulier. Afin de mieux apprécier la situation en Afrique subsaharienne, nous partirons de l’examen d’autres contextes, notamment ceux du Canada et des pays de l’Union européenne, en guise de références et comme points de comparaison. L’objectif du présent article est double : familiariser le lecteur avec l’histoire et l’évolution de la formation des traducteurs dans les contextes étudiés, puis et plus essentiellement, attirer l’attention sur la situation qui prévaut, s’agissant de la formation des traducteurs professionnels en Afrique subsaharienne en général, et au Nigéria, géant d’Afrique, en particulier.
