Abstract
L’histoire des relations militaires entre la France et les États-Unis commence au milieu du XVIII e siècle, avec la guerre de Sept Ans, qui oppose Américains et Français au Canada. Vingt ans plus tard, tout a changé. Américains et Français s’allient contre un ennemi commun : l’Empire britannique. La France envoie un corps expéditionnaire pour soutenir les Américains dans leur guerre d’Indépendance. Par la suite, c’est l’ombre de Napoléon qui plane sur les états-majors américains, notamment pendant la guerre de Sécession. Mais lorsque la Première Guerre mondiale éclate, l’impréparation des Américains est telle qu’ils préfèrent d’abord la neutralité. Le corps expéditionnaire américain, commandé par le général John J. Pershing, débarque en France en 1917. Français et Américains s’opposent alors sur l’instruction des troupes américaines, sur leur emploi et leur commandement. Quand ils entrent dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les États-Unis peuvent déployer l’armement et l’équipement qui ont tant manqué à la France en 1940. Cette évolution sera déterminante au lendemain de la guerre.
