Le collège municipal de Saint-Lô (Manche), largement détruit par les bombardements de la ville en 1944, fut reconstruit entre 1948 et 1955 par Pierre Duprat (1919-2002) et Michel Pinget (1911-1987). Devenu mixte en 1953, transformé en lycée en 1955, il prit alors le nom de l’astronome saint-lois Urbain Le Verrier. Évolutions institutionnelles et architecturales se conjuguent donc au cours de la période de la Reconstruction afin d’offrir aux élèves un établissement modernisé, confortable et conforme aux prescriptions les plus récentes du ministère de l’Éducation nationale.Le cas de Saint-Lô illustre aussi les ambitions, les réussites et les limites de la Seconde Reconstruction. Le nouveau lycée devait contribuer au renouveau urbanistique de Saint-Lô. Il s’inscrit finalement en partie dans les pas de l’établissement qui existait avant-guerre (localisation, disposition générale héritée du XIXe siècle), pour des raisons avant tout économiques. Mais les aléas du chantier et l’évolution des normes ont alourdi la facture et grevé pour longtemps les finances communales. L’établissement fut néanmoins jugé très réussi, à l’instar d’un programme décoratif unique dans le paysage saint-lois, qui associe sculptures et mosaïques, notamment un Planétarium (1957-1958) de Robert Couturier (1905-2008) aujourd’hui déposé au musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Saint-Lô.
