Les BIMs concernent des technologies et des méthodes, couvrant le cycle de vie complet du bâtiment ou d'une construction, qui permettent de concevoir et de documenter (information modelling), de coordonner et de gérer (information management) l’information décrivant un édifice, mais aussi ses contraintes et ses objectifs performanciels. En collaboration avec le GRIDD (ETS, Université de Québec), le LUCID (Université de Liège) travaille depuis 2013 sur la question de l’implémentation des BIMs dans les processus de conception intégrée de grandes entreprises en architecture et en ingénierie. Pour ce faire, une grille de maturité pour l'évaluation du niveau d’intégration des BIMs dans les entreprises a été (re)définie et utilisée en vue de cartographier et de formaliser la perception de la situation réelle de chacun des protagonistes au moment de l’étude. La méthodologie originale mise en place à cet effet sert de support à la définition des objectifs désirés par l'entreprise pour la poursuite son processus d’intégration. Aujourd’hui, notre démarche est mise en parallèlement en Belgique et au Canada, aussi bien avec des agences d’architecture que des entreprises de construction.
