A tradaptação como proposta combinada : Romeu e Julieta do Grupo Galpão.
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This paper seeks to discuss the play Romeu e Julieta, 1992, by Grupo Galpao, from the perspective of tradaptation, as a combined proposal to approach the play. The term tradaptation came from the Canadian playwright Michel Garneau, who produced three Shakespearean plays in the midst of the Revolution Tranquille in the Canadian province of Quebec, a movement which aimed to enhance local culture especially by emancipating the local languages. Based on a discussion about what a translation and an adaptation are, we notice the main similarity between the processes: that of bringing the target audience closer to the plot of the play by highlighting the target culture. A very important concept to this discussion is transculturation, a term coined by the Cuban anthropologist, Fernando Ortiz, which emphasizes how productions made by marginalized cultures, or as Itamar Even-Zohar proposes, coming from a “peripheral” polysystem, react to the foreign (dominant or “central”) culture, using the latter as a support to enhance local colors. Thus, by reviewing the trajectory of Grupo Galpao up to their staging of Shakespeare’s play, and by analyzing the regional and national elements inserted into the play deliberately to promote recognition between the new target audience and the plot, we understand that the play can be considered a tradaptation. To identify Galpao’s Romeu e Julieta as a tradaptation emphasizes how important the inserted Brazilian elements are, as well as placing this play as an audience and critic success into the intertextual creative network that surrounds the plot of the young lovers of Verona.
