Preparative Method: the reaction of 1,3-propanediol with sodium nitrite in the presence of sulfuric acid affords 1,3-propanediol dinitrite in high yields (eq 1).2,3 The crude product can be purified by distillation if desired.1 (1) Handling, Storage, and Precautions: store on Na2SO4 at 0 °C and protect from light.2 DSC-TGA analysis shows a slow evaporation of the material with no sudden decomposition.4 Thermal decomposition occurs at 300 °C to produce ethylene, NO + NO2, formaldehyde, and CO2.1
