Cet article s’intéresse à l’utilisation du pouvoir et du rapport de force qu’il induit (discours, normalisation, surveillance et approches disciplinaires). Ce rapport de force subjectivise l’individu, l’amène à s’autodiscipliner, à devenir docile et à s’assujettir et est propice à des phénomènes d’abus de pouvoir. Par l’analyse de l’histoire de dirigeants québécois reconnus et détenteurs d’un grand pouvoir, nous montrons les dimensions permettant à un dirigeant d’exercer son pouvoir de manière responsable au travers d’un leadership sain. L’ exemplarité comme fondement éthique (ou constitution morale) représente une voie pertinente pour endiguer, dans une certaine mesure, les problématiques d’abus de pouvoir. La constitution morale d’un dirigeant prend son origine dans son histoire, dans le contexte d’une époque et d’une culture ainsi que dans des pratiques de soi. Ces dernières s’exercent dans un rapport conscient de soi à soi constitué de règles en lien avec un idéal de conduite à atteindre. La constitution morale rend possible une gouvernance de soi assumée et donc une gouvernance des autres plus saine et judicieuse.
