Abstract
We live in a patriarchal world where being born as a male gives one power. Any impartial study will confirm this hypothesis. However, I do not want to delve into statistics, because, we do not need statistics to know that women are at best given secondary status and at worst, are objects of gratification. Ancient texts in Sanskrit, the oldest living language, portray women as distraction to men in their path of salvation. In Ramayana, the ancient Hindu scripture, Rama, who was an incarnation of God, and revered as one of the wisest kings, made her wife walk through fire twice to prove her chastity, because she had been kidnapped by a neighbouring king. Thus, shaming the woman victim was part of culture as early as 7600 BC. Bible, too, blames Eve for Adam’s sin, though Adam as an adult was capable of taking independent decisions. Subjugation of women in our society is almost as normal as breathing oxygen. No doubt, feminist movements are derided and scorned at, women’s voice are looked upon as nuisance and slightest inappropriate behaviour by women are judged upon. Women are supposed to exist in order to reproduce and to give sexual and social gratification to men. Hence, marital rape is not a criminal offence in many countries in the world including India, China, Indonesia, Kuwait and Singapore. An entire gender has been marginalized since time immemorial and societal norms break their confidence and demolish their self-respect since childhood. A female fights a battle everyday, every moment, indoors and outdoors, with family, friends and strangers. Is this true security where an entire gender is ostracised? This is a question that affects each and every country in the world, though at varying degrees, and is a fundamental human rights issue that needs to be addressed immediately.
