This chapter presents a case scenario of a 52-year-old man who works in an automotive plant, with repetitive tasks, presents with a six-month history of increasing nocturnal numbness, paresthesiae, in a median nerve distribution. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy presenting to physicians. The association of CTS to work and ergonomic factors remains an important topic given the costs of workmen’s compensation. High force, vibration, and repetition can be associated with an increased incidence of CTS. Electrodiagnostic studies are sometimes normal in patients who meet the clinical criteria of CTS, and some authors have argued that nerve conduction studies are unnecessary when the clinical examination is classic. The nonoperative treatment of mild to moderate CTS can be divided into the following main categories: activity modification, splinting, oral medications, physiotherapy and modalities, and corticosteroid injection. The chapter provides recommendations for implementing evidence-based practice in the clinical setting.
