Abstract
A radical shift has taken place, from selective or universal prohibition of native spiritual practices in efforts toward assimilation to their celebration as a solution to individualism, alienation, rampant technology — all the perceived ills of postindustrial society.The development of a mass audience outside the native community, hungering for authenticity but uninformed and indiscriminate in its tastes, is seen to have placed an enormous strain on the integrity and cultural viability of many forms of native spirituality. If there is a literary antecedent to New Age spiritualism and its efforts to derive benefit from the sacred places, rituals, and beliefs of Native Americans, it is to be found in a nineteenth-century body of literature, including the work of Thoreau and Emerson, that glorifies nature rather than the Indian, and individualism rather than the religious community. The practices that have emerged within the New Age movement have a potential to reinforce stereotypes and compromise the status of those who continue to see spiritual awareness as a long and sometimes difficult process, as an “ordeal.”
