Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Turkey is a prominent regional actor on the Syrian Civil War. While its involvement was originally focused on deposing Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Turkish military operations initiated in 2016 had as its target the Kurdish militias that had been achieving their autonomous region in Northern Syria since 2012. The 'Kurdish Issue' implies a transnational linkage between Turkey's and Syria's Kurdish struggle, which is why this article is going to investigate its relationship with the Turkish involvement in the war. The empirical literature regarding intrastate conflicts suggests those political systems who promote ethnic exclusion from power access and transnational linkages of political-ideological nature between ethnic minorities cause, respectively, a higher propensity to conflict and a higher risk of conflict spillover beyond national borders. This is relevant because Turkey's structure is exclusionary since its inception as a national state, furthermore the most relevant Kurdish political groups in these two countries (PKK in Turkey and PYD in Syria) have a political-ideological connection antagonized by Turkish nationalism. This article's key findings suggest that Erdogan's government suffered radical changes in its stance regarding a solution for the 'Kurdish issue' by placing it as a topic of securitization as it saw PYD's expansion in northern Syria as a national threat capable of giving new possibilities to the PKK's insurgence. Turkey's main objective would no longer be the regime's overthrow, but to neutralize PYD as a threat.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
