Dual Differential-Fed 2×2 Phased Array with Reconfigurable Polarization and Radiation Pattern Diversity

Abstract
A 2×2 phased array with simplified control of six polarization states and two sets of radiation patterns is presented. Implementing two single pole single throw switches (SPSTs) and three phase shifters results in six different polarization states, including 0°, 90°, ±45° linear polarization (LP), right-hand circular polarization (RHCP), and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP). Moreover, two types of radiation patterns, including a single main-beam at broadside and multi-beams (i.e., 4 Beams) are achieved using the proposed topologies. Configurations of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) used in the feed network are presented. The antenna has an operating frequency band of 9.25−9.55 GHz. The peak realized gain for broadside main-beam and 4 Beams at 9.45 GHz are 12.47 dB and 6.57 dB, respectively. The radiation pattern and polarization diversity along with the compactness and relatively high gain of the proposed phase array, make it a suitable candidate for Radar and navigation systems.
