Abstract
The results of requesting reprints by writing to authors are described. The median time to receive a reprint is about 30 days. Unfortunately, for 42 % of countries, more than 33% of the requests do not succeed. For another 42% the failure rate is 20-32%, and for 16% of the countries the rate is below 20%. The fraction of the unsuccessful requests is higher for requests from the majority of developing countries. Even for some developed countries the failure rate is high (USA, UK, Germany, and Canada – 38, 30, 31, and 30%, respectively). It is not possible to rely on reprint requests alone to keep up with the literature.
