In this letter, the use of 4-pulsed amplitude modulation (PAM) in passive optical network (PON) implementations is investigated. The difference between the NRZ and 4-PAM modulation in principle is analyzed. We demonstrate 4-PAM modulation up to 10 Gb/s using direct detection In the meantime, 20-km even 30km transmission at 10 Gb/s with bit-error-rate below the forward-error-correction (FEC) limit can be achieved.
