La terminologie fait partie integrante de differents usages dont on fait de la langue. Elle est percue comme instrument de developpement linguistique etant donne qu’elle concerne la denomination et l’etude des termes. Les nouveaux produits techniques ne peuvent pas etre introduits efficacement dans un milieu donne sans une denomination appropriee dans la langue de ce milieu. De meme, il n’y aura pas la denomination de nouveaux concepts sauf par ce moyen d’expression et de communication qui est la langue. Il existe ainsi une cohabitation mutuelle entre la terminologie et la langue. Pour maintenir cette existence mutuelle, la fonctionpragmatique de la terminologie doit etre soutenue a vive allure. Or, la terminologie classique de Wuster (1979) ne favorise pas la denomination et l’acceptation de nouveaux objets en milieu culturel africain ou la perception est differente, etant basee lourdement sur les elements culturels. Si Cabre (2000) a deja suggere une description tridimensionnelle du terme, l’objet de la terminologie, a savoir : une linguistique, une sociale et une utilitaire, implicitement, la fonction de la terminologie surtout dans un milieu social et culturel est egalement redefinie. Il en decoule une mise en question de la demarche et de la fonction de la terminologie moderne surtout dans le milieu africain. Nous soutenons que la solution viable est dans la promotion et la soutenance de la terminologie culturelle. Nous commencons cette contribution par un apercu de la terminologie culturelle, qui prend sa source a la socioterminologie. Nous passons ensuite a la problematique de la denomination dans la culture africaine et terminons par des exemples precis pris de l’igbo, une langue parlee au Nigeria.
